Supreme Court punishes Matara teacher for using corporal punishment

Supreme Court today ordered the state and a teacher to pay Rs 650,000 as compensations for a student who has lost his hearing ability due to corporal punishment.

State was ordered to pay Rs 500,000 and the teacher who slapped the student was ordere to pay Rs 150,000 using personal funds.

Parents of the student filed a case against the school teacher in Matara over the incident in 2017. Student has lost his hearing ability for life due to the punishment. Supreme court ordered both the state and teacher to settle the compensation within six months.
